Maybe A Pilates Instructor Course Could Provide A New Career?
Many disciplines come under the umbrella of fitness and health-improving training courses. Before you limit yourself to one particular certification or skill, why not look at how much demand there might be for that type of training in your area? However, the demand for all types of fitness related guidance and teaching is evident nationwide. Therefore with the right level of enthusiasm and commitment, coupled with the correct qualifications and knowledge base, there's no reason not to succeed.
Your First Assignment...
You may already know if you've had a look around that you can take many different routes to get certified, and not all courses are the same. Regard your exploratory searching of different training providers as your first piece of coursework! Refer to various options, not just the first one you see - a few hours of research on several different websites will teach you a lot about what you should expect to learn, and which certifications are professionally respected.
Your Specialist Subject Is...?
So you know the fitness industry is the right one for you, but you don't want to choose the wrong area. Let's break it down. If you took ten fitness instructors and asked them to describe their job, they'd each say different things. Fitness training isn't simply about learning the best cardio techniques - of course personal trainers and gym coaches need to cover that, but a professional has a good deal more to learn than that.
Look for scientific modules in fitness training programmes. Training can cover various aspects of physiology, kinesiology, psychology, biomechanics and anatomy.
Next comes sports injuries, massage and first aid. Along with optimal cardio workouts, weights and equipment. And then there's client appraisals and records, and health and safety knowledge.
As if that's not enough, anybody starting up in business for themselves will need some sales training, a business plan, marketing know-how, finance and accounting knowledge and a tad of legal info on dealing with clients. Good Grief!!!
Start Small and Grow...
But you don't need to be an expert on the whole list to begin with, and many people carve out a great niche for themselves by learning a lot about one specialist area.
Take weight management and nutrition. Nutrition is really interesting - learn about what food groups contain what, and the impact they all have on the body. Look at how food is absorbed, and how we metabolise and digest food. Progress to weight management, where you'll cover lifestyle, life stages, calorific values etc. In addition you'll cover what constitutes a healthy diet, how to deal with eating disorders and how to put together diet and exercise programmes.
What do you think of focusing on personal training? If you're a positive, upbeat person you'll inspire others with your attitude. A good course for a personal trainer will contain a scientific element to cover the physiological elements of fitness. This will give you the confidence to advise accurately.
Perhaps you're a regular visitor to your local gym, and fancy taking up gym instruction yourself. Look for practical courses that will give you a deep understanding of your professional requirements. You must be able to work with a new person and create an exercise routine that is safe and functional for their needs. Good client assessment training is therefore essential. Additionally you will learn teaching skills, how to design effective warm ups and cool downs, and of course all about resistance and cardiovascular exercises and gym machinery.
And If You Want To Add Something Extra...
Your career as a fitness trainer could be boosted by having a supplemental skill in the prevention and treatment of injuries. If you can see yourself working in this field, you might consider getting into rehabilitation and qualify as a Yoga Instructor or a Reiki Practitioner for example.
You might think about adding a comprehensive personal assessment of health and well-being for your clients. This would mean being taught how to carry out a range of assessments which would monitor a person's fitness level. The kind of things to monitor are cardio fitness, posture, strength, muscle tone and blood pressure to name but a few.
