Studying Part Time Plumbing Courses For A New Career

Enjoy The Benefits Of Becoming A Plumber

If you retrain and become certified as a plumber your skills will always be in demand. Although it's harder to find commercial work, there's a great deal of domestic business to pick up. We all know a neighbour or friend of a friend who couldn't get an emergency plumber for weeks! And as fewer people are moving house, more and more choose to upgrade their existing homes with new kitchens and bathrooms. So if it's time to make a change, a closer look at a plumbing career could offer everything you need.

Completely FREE Research Report!

Whether you're already quite handy, or it's all completely new to you, once you're trained and certified there's work to be had. But to avoid any confusion about what you need or don't need to know, we recommend you go through our detailed FREE Plumbing Research Booklet. With so many different companies providing varying standards of training and exams, you'll find the information invaluable.

We recommend you download the book first and take time to get to grips with its contents. And then read this feature again, and visit some of the college websites listed here. If you Bookmark this website (press Ctrl D) you'll be able to retrieve it instantly.

Convert To Self-Employment

Many people train as plumbers so that they can join the ranks of the self- employed and have more control over their lives. In fact almost all of those entering the industry beyond their mid twenties work independently in private houses. This is hardly surprising when you realise how much work is out there, and the kind of money that decent plumbers can make. A lot of work will come from friends of people you've done a good job for. People like to recommend great service.

A training college will cover all your trade skills, but your attitude and manners will be down to you. Business can come in from anywhere and everywhere! Politeness and good manners will always be remembered.

As a rule, those working for commercial plumbers will put in around 37-40 hours, Mon-Fri only. You'd be wise to open that up a little though if you plan to work for yourself in private housing. Many working people can't afford to take time off work, so plumbers who will visit outside working hours can often get much better business.

Rewarding Work For Years To Come...

If security and a decent income are high on your agenda, you must have skills that everybody needs. Good plumbers fit that bill. There's a lot of job satisfaction - as it's always good to see the end result of a job well done. You won't be bored with repetitive work that just becomes the same old thing. Each day will present you with new and interesting challenges.

If you're going to set yourself up as a business, you'll have to learn a thing or two about costing out jobs. Which means covering all your overheads so you don't lose money. Although it can be a bit daunting at first, most plumbers get the hang of it pretty quickly. Private training companies sometimes feature a course on working for yourself.

What's The Next Step?

Both Further Education colleges and private training companies should feature basic plumber training in City & Guilds certifications. Young trainee plumbers in their teens tend to go for work experience as well as college to get practical NVQ certifications as well. But more mature career changers like to hang onto their old jobs whilst they study part-time.

So the more flexible courses offered by specialist companies tend to be more geared towards adult re-trainers. Their fees will be higher, but in the long run they're more cost effective for the person looking to work for themselves in a predominantly domestic environment.

Bolt-On Extras

When you do your training course, you'll learn all about common plumbing processes and the key principles you need to know. But if you increase your skill-set you can take on many more roles. If you take Part P for example you'll comply with the regulations for domestic electrical work. It's a big positive to have several strings to your bow. Your customer-base will broaden, and the jobs will be more profitable. There'll be no waiting around for bathroom fitters or tilers if you can do the work yourself - and the customer will be much less inconvenienced.

If you're looking to change careers and want reliable, well-paid on-going work, this could well be the right choice for you.
